UNIVPM Advances Laboratory Activities and Communication within the AlFunFeed Project

The Università Politecnica delle Marche (UNIVPM) is making steady progress in the AlFunFeed – Fungal single-cell protein from macroalgal waste fermentation project, contributing both cutting-edge scientific research and strategic communication efforts. UNIVPM is an active partner in this international consortium, which aims to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for aquaculture through the production of single-cell proteins derived from the fungal fermentation of macroalgal waste.

The UNIVPM research group, led by Prof. Ike Olivotto and including Prof. Giorgia Gioacchini, Prof. Francesca Maradonna, Prof. Elisabetta Giorgini, and Dr. Giulia Chemello, is intensively engaged in optimizing laboratory techniques, a crucial step to ensure the robustness of experimental protocols and the reliability of results. Current activities focus on:

  • Refining analytical methodologies to assess fish welfare and monitor physiological and histological responses to novel feed formulations
  • Evaluating the effects of innovative feeds derived from fungal single-cell proteins on fish performance and health
  • Enhancing experimental protocols to guarantee high reproducibility and scientific rigor

Alongside these laboratory activities, UNIVPM plays a central role in communication and dissemination within the AlFunFeed project. The team has developed a comprehensive set of materials to share project goals, progress, and outcomes with a wide audience. The official project website and AlFunFeed LinkedIn page are now fully operational, providing regular updates and fostering dialogue with the scientific community, aquaculture stakeholders, and anyone interested in sustainability, circular economy, and the blue bioeconomy.

The integrated approach adopted by UNIVPM—combining high-level scientific research with structured communication strategies—maximizes the scientific and societal impact of the project. By supporting knowledge transfer, stakeholder engagement, and the development of innovative aquaculture solutions, UNIVPM reinforces its commitment to applied research in life and environmental sciences and contributes to the European Green Transition.

With its active participation in AlFunFeed, UNIVPM continues to demonstrate the importance of collaboration between research excellence and effective science communication, ensuring that project innovations are not only scientifically robust but also widely disseminated and impactful for society and the aquaculture sector.
