AlFunFeed project receives prestigious Ocean Decade Endorsement.

The AlFunFeed project has officially received endorsement as a Decade Action under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

This recognition highlights the project’s strong alignment with global efforts to advance ocean science and develop innovative, sustainable solutions to pressing environmental challenges.

What does the endorsement mean? Being endorsed as a Decade Action implies that AlFunFeed meets high international standards for scientific excellence, societal relevance, and sustainability impact. It also confirms that the project contributes meaningfully to the Ocean Decade’s vision: “the science we need for the ocean we want.”

Although AlFunFeed is not yet attached to a specific Decade Programme, the endorsement places it within a growing global network of initiatives working collaboratively to improve ocean health and resilience.

Why is this important for AlFunFeed project? This endorsement brings several key benefits to the project. First, it provides international recognition by validating the scientific and environmental value of AlFunFeed on a global scale, thereby increasing its visibility among researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders. In addition, it opens up enhanced collaboration opportunities, as participation in the Ocean Decade framework allows AlFunFeed to engage with Communities of Practice platforms designed to foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and synergies across disciplines and regions. The endorsement also highlights the project’s strong alignment with global sustainability goals, as AlFunFeed contributes to more sustainable aquaculture by transforming macroalgal waste into high-value fungal protein, reducing reliance on traditional fish feed sources, and lowering carbon emissions. Finally, it creates potential for future growth, with the possibility for the project to evolve into a larger Decade Programme through the inclusion of new partners, geographic expansion, or integration with complementary initiatives.

Commitment to Ocean Decade principles. As an endorsed Decade Action, AlFunFeed is committed to adopting key principles promoted by the Ocean Decade, including co-design and stakeholder engagement across the entire ocean science value chain, collaboration with decision-makers and policy actors, and open and accessible data management to ensure transparency and knowledge sharing. These principles will guide the ongoing development and implementation of the project, ensuring that its outcomes are impactful, inclusive, and widely accessible.

This endorsement marks a significant milestone for AlFunFeed, reinforcing its mission to develop innovative, circular solutions for aquaculture while contributing to ocean sustainability.
